Masa, Huichen and Hyun-Jin publish study identifying cancer-specific signature mutations in
Merkel cell polyomavirus
In a free text paper published in
PNAS these lab members show that mutations in the helicase domain of Tag are consistently
found in virus from tumors but not in virus derived from healthy tissues. The mutation probably
arises to prevent the integrated virus DNA from replicating, which would cause a DNA break
response in the tumor cells. This paper also describes the first cell lines infected with the
virus.
